Become One Through the Atonement

As taught by Elder Henry B. Eyring, we become one in our marriage through utilizing the atonement. When you breakdown the word “atonement” you come up with “at” “one” “ment” which means to unite. The atonement allows us to become united with the Savior because of the sacrifice he made for us so we can be reunited with our Heavenly Father again. When we apply this concept in our marriages we are simply becoming united as a couple.

In Genesis 2:24 we read,

“Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.”

When you unite in a marriage you become one intimately as well as emotionally and intellectually. It is important to be open toward each other and share your thoughts and desires. We must become one with the Savior as well as our spouse simultaneously, and we can best do that by welcoming the Spirit into our homes.

Elder Eyring also said,

“Where people have the Spirit with them, we may expect harmony.”

If we don’t have harmony in the home then we are moving farther away rather than becoming one like we should.

Another way we can more effectively become one is by letting go of pride. Pride is very destructive to a relationship because it shuts down good feelings and increases feelings of contention.

Don’t let your differences get between you and your spouse. Be humble. Share with one another what you enjoy to do and find similarities that can bring joy into your lives.
